Important Information:

On April 22, the federal government announced new initiatives for Canadian students in light of COVID-19’s effect on summer jobs.

Most of the information below is a summary of the new planned measures.

CANADA STUDENT SERVICE GRANT

The Canada Student Service Grant of $1000-$5000 is to reward students “who choose to do national service and serve their communities” in the fight against COVID-19 and will also help students gain work experience, skills, and pay for tuition in September. Volunteer programs will be aimed at essential services in areas such as agriculture, food services, and the health sector. The amount of Grant you receive will depend on your volunteer hours.

NEW STUDENT JOBS

The federal government is creating 76,000 jobs for young people in sectors that need help due to COVID-19, or that are at the front lines of this pandemic. This is in addition to the Canada Summer Jobs program. (The Job Bank is the primary source for information for youth on the availability of positions funded through the program.). As in the volunteer programs, these placements will be aimed at essential services in areas such as agriculture, food services, and the health sector, e.g., COVID-19 contact tracing and jobs in farming.

As an aside, for a list of other potential job opportunities take a look at Who’s Hiring in Canada?

DOUBLING CANADA STUDENT GRANTS

Student grants will be doubled in 2020-21 including those grants for students with dependents and permanent disabilities. Fulltime students are eligible for up to $6,000 and part-time students are eligible for up to $3,600.

ENHANCING CANADA STUDENT LOANS

The maximum weekly amount for the Canada Student Loans Program will increase from $210 to $350.

SPECIFIC SUPPORT FOR INDIGENOUS STUDENTS

The government is investing an additional $75.2 million in existing distinctions-based support for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Nation students.

BROADENING ELIGIBILITY FOR STUDENT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

When assessing financial aid for students the expected student contributions will be broadened because many students and parents may not have the extra income to save for postsecondary education.

CANADA EMERGENCY STUDENT BENEFIT

This Benefit of $1,250 per month ($1,750 for students with dependents or permanent disabilities) is for those not covered by CERB*. This Benefit will help you pay for rent and living expenses and will run from May 1-August.

You are eligible:

–  if you are a postsecondary student.

–  if you are going to university or college in September.

–  if you graduated in December 2019.

Also, you can receive the Canada Emergency Student Benefit if you have a job and your monthly income is $1000 or less.

*The Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) is available to those who made at least $5,000 in the last year, and who stopped working because of COVID-19. The CERB provides $500 a week for up to 16 weeks.

A NOTE ON SCHOLARSHIPS

A number of scholarship providers are either postponing their scholarship opportunities, suspending their scholarship for 2020, or extending the deadline. If you are interested in any specific scholarship, be sure to check the website for potential updates.

Thank You
